Death Toll Reaches 94 in Hong Kong Fire as Rescue Efforts Persist

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The tragic high-rise fire in Hong Kong has claimed 94 lives, prompting ongoing firefighting efforts for a second day in the Tai Po district. This incident, engulfing the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex, marks one of the deadliest disasters in modern Hong Kong history, equaling the worst catastrophe since 1948.

Smoke continued to billow from various windows on Thursday as rescuers cautiously navigated through charred apartments, using flashlights in search of any survivors trapped within the seven damaged towers. The extensive housing complex, once bustling with thousands of residents, now stands severely damaged, with portions of buildings collapsing from the intense heat.

Fire officials reported that they successfully extinguished blazes in four out of eight towers, while flames in three others were largely under control. Crews continued combing through the debris, aware that there may still be victims in the wreckage.

According to Deputy Director of Fire Services Operations Derek Armstrong Chan, the priority remains on quelling any remaining embers to prevent reignition, with a full focus shifting towards search and rescue operations.

Authorities previously indicated a loss of contact with 279 residents, but updates were scarce during the latest briefing. Families anxiously gathered in nearby shelters, praying for news of their loved ones.

Footage from the scene showed rescuers navigating smoke-filled corridors and damaged units as blazing flames flickered inside multiple apartments. Firefighters have faced daunting challenges since the blaze reportedly ignited on bamboo scaffolding before rapidly consuming the 32-storey towers.

The speed of the fire’s spread was characterized as "exceptionally fast" by officials, who noted dangerous conditions posed by falling debris, high heat, and obstructed access due to collapsed materials.

In addition to the 94 confirmed fatalities, over 70 individuals sustained injuries, including 11 firefighters. Nearly 900 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters overnight.

Pope Leo XIV extended prayers and condolences to the Bishop of Hong Kong, honoring the victims, the injured, and the brave responders.

The ordeal for many families has been agonizing. One resident, Lawrence Lee, recounted speaking to his wife as she attempted to escape their apartment. Smoke quickly filled the corridor, forcing her return, and he has not heard from her since.

Other evacuees, like Winter and Sandy Chung, described witnessing sparks and debris as they fled. While they found safety, concerns for their neighbors and homes linger in their minds.

Police have apprehended three individuals—two company directors and an engineering consultant—on suspicions of manslaughter. Investigations suggest that negligence during renovation contributed to the fire’s rapid dissemination. Authorities also raided the office of Prestige Construction & Engineering Company, gathering documents as evidence.

Concerns arose over the use of non-compliant exterior materials, with investigators finding highly flammable plastic foam panels near elevator lobbies in an unaffected tower. The purpose of these panels is still under scrutiny.

Constructed in the 1980s, the Wang Fuk Court complex consists of eight towers, housing nearly 4,800 residents, many of whom are elderly. Major renovations were underway when the fire occurred. Hong Kong’s anti-corruption agency has initiated a probe into potential misconduct associated with the renovation.

Experts confirmed that the fire originated from external scaffolding, quickly escalating due to the bamboo materials, construction netting, and wind conditions. Although bamboo scaffolding is widely used in Hong Kong, officials may advocate for a transition to metal scaffolding to enhance safety.

Immediate inspections will occur in all housing estates undergoing renovations to align with safety standards and avert similar disasters.

This tragic blaze is being recognized as the most severe fire Hong Kong has seen in decades, with the last notable incident occurring in 1996, resulting in 41 fatalities in a Kowloon commercial building.
