Hong Kong grapples with its most devastating crisis in decades following a catastrophic fire that engulfed the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Tai Po. This tragic incident has claimed at least 55 lives, with nearly 300 individuals still unaccounted for. The city has not experienced such a disaster in 77 years.
Firefighters confronted the inferno for over 24 hours, navigating through thick smoke and extreme heat to reach those trapped on the upper floors of the towering 32-storey buildings. The structures were obscured by green construction mesh and bamboo scaffolding, which ignited quickly, complicating rescue efforts.
The calamity has sent shockwaves throughout the city. Families displaced from the burning residencies have gathered in shelters, anxiously seeking updates about their loved ones. In an emotional moment, one mother clutched her daughter's graduation photo while lamenting, “She and her father are still missing; they lacked the water needed to save our home.”
The complex, comprising eight blocks and around 2,000 apartments, houses over 4,600 residents. Due to the area's population density, fears persist that the casualty figures may rise.
Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee, characterized the incident as a significant emergency and announced a relief funding of HK$300 million to aid affected families. Amid growing public outcry, the government is contemplating a shift from traditional bamboo scaffolding to safer metal alternatives.
Authorities have swiftly initiated an inquiry into the rapid spread of the fire, focusing on Prestige Construction and Engineering Company Limited, the contractor involved in renovation work on the complex. President Xi Jinping has demanded an “all-out effort” to minimize further casualties. Over 1,200 firefighters and more than 300 fire trucks have been deployed to the scene. One firefighter has tragically lost their life, while many survivors remain critically injured in hospital care.
The renovation project, ongoing for a year and costing HK$330 million, required contributions of up to HK$180,000 from each family. Additionally, the city’s anti-corruption agency is launching a separate investigation into potential graft tied to the renovation agreement.

This disaster has drawn parallels to the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London, which led to 72 fatalities due to hazardous cladding and inadequate regulation. Residents in Hong Kong now worry that a similar combination of lax oversight and overcrowded living conditions poses risks in numerous other structures throughout the city.
A number of Chinese corporations, including Xiaomi, Xpeng, Geely, and the charitable organization founded by Alibaba's Jack Ma, have pledged support for the victims.
This fire occurs during a politically sensitive period, as Hong Kong approaches a citywide legislative election in December. The tragedy could heighten public frustration regarding housing shortages, inadequate maintenance, and sluggish governmental response.
