In light of a catastrophic fire that resulted in 159 fatalities, Hong Kong officials have initiated a prompt operation to eliminate mesh netting from all construction sites across the city. The incident, marked as one of the deadliest in recent memory, highlighted the nets' role in the swift propagation of the flames.
The government has declared that scaffolding nets on both public and private structures should be removed by Saturday, as part of efforts to restore public trust and ensure the safety of inhabitants. Consequently, renovation activities will be on hold while officials inspect remaining materials for compliance with safety regulations.
Close to the site of the tragedy at Wang Fuk Court, workers in Sha Tin began taking down protective nets on Thursday. Local residents, like 82-year-old C.K. Lau, expressed approval of the initiative, asserting it mitigates the possibility of future incidents.
Authorities have apprehended 21 individuals linked to the fire, including 15 from construction firms facing manslaughter allegations and six others suspected of fraudulent activities related to fire service installations.
Preliminary findings indicate that inferior plastic mesh and insulation foam, coupled with malfunctioning fire safety systems, exacerbated the blaze, which lasted for 40 hours. Residents had previously been reassured about the low fire risks associated with the renovation work.
The government is requiring construction companies to foot the bill for removing netting from upwards of 200 private dwellings and more than 10 public sites. Anticipated new safety rules will necessitate that any future scaffolding materials receive testing and certification from recognized laboratories.
Investigations are continuing into claims that safety documents for netting sourced from a Chinese manufacturer may have been fabricated, impacting two construction sites, one of which involved Prestige Construction.
Among the victims, 140 have been identified, with ages spanning from one to 97 years old. The search is still underway for 31 individuals, many of whom are foreign domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines. Over 2,900 individuals have been displaced and provided with temporary housing options, including hostels and camps.
As Hong Kong moves forward, it faces the dual challenge of ensuring public safety while addressing ongoing construction and housing needs, with the investigation into the incident still ongoing.
