Actor Huma Qureshi recently shared insights into her early journey into Bollywood, revealing that her parents were quite concerned when she received her first film offer. They initially believed the offer could be associated with a “prostitution racket.”
‘They really doubted me,’ recalls Huma
Huma expressed how her parents were taken aback when she informed them about a filmmaker wanting to cast her. “My parents didn’t believe it. They wondered, why would someone choose you? It seemed like the craziest thing to them. They thought it was a prostitution scam; they were completely convinced,” she said.
She noted that it took a significant amount of persuasion for her to earn their support for her acting ambitions. “Looking back now, I realize they had little faith in my ability to make decisions for myself. It required quite a bit of convincing, especially since my parents aren’t from this industry. Even today, I doubt they fully understand how it all functions.”
The film that never came to fruition
Against their wishes, Huma chose to explore the opportunity. She engaged with the filmmakers, read the script, and participated in a screen test. Sadly, the project did not come to light. “The film was never made, which really disappointed me,” she acknowledged.
Rise to prominence with Gangs of Wasseypur
Prior to her Bollywood debut, Huma featured in several short films and commercials. Her true breakthrough arrived with Anurag Kashyap’s renowned crime thriller Gangs of Wasseypur: Part 2 (2012), which brought her widespread acclaim.
Diverse career and latest ventures
Throughout her career, Huma has taken on a range of characters across various genres— from Ek Thi Daayan and Badlapur to Jolly LLB 2. Although some films like Dedh Ishqiya and D-Day didn’t achieve expected success, Huma’s strong performances continued to shine.
Recently, she appeared in Maharani Season 4, revisiting her role as the astute and politically savvy Rani Bharti. Additionally, she starred as a police officer in Bayan, which was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and participated in Jolly LLB 3. Huma is set to play a pivotal role in Netflix’s upcoming Delhi Crime 3.
