In a thrilling contest on Sunday night, the Carolina Hurricanes reinforced their winning streak with a close 5-4 triumph against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Logan Stankoven showcased his skills by scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period while also providing an assist that helped clinch the game for the visiting Hurricanes at Scotiabank Arena.
The Hurricanes' prolific offense featured contributions from Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Sean Walker, and Taylor Hall, with six players recording points overall. K’Andre Miller and Nikolaj Ehlers each added two assists, and goaltender Brandon Bussi made 16 saves, ensuring Carolina's fourth consecutive victory.
On the other side, the Maple Leafs had standout performances from William Nylander, who notched two goals, as well as John Tavares and Auston Matthews, each contributing a goal and an assist. Rookie Matthew Knies provided two assists, but despite a strong offensive drive, Toronto struggled against the Hurricanes’ relentless pressure. Goalie Dennis Hildeby recorded a career-high 42 saves, though it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
The opening period was dynamic and full of goals. Toronto struck first, just five minutes in, when Morgan Rielly connected with Knies, who set up Nylander for a stylish backhand goal. Carolina quickly leveled the score as Sebastian Aho netted a power-play equalizer at 8:34.
Seth Jarvis then pushed the Hurricanes ahead with a well-placed shot at 14:31. However, the Maple Leafs responded; John Tavares found the net from a close-range pass at 15:31 to tie the game. Nylander added his second with a powerful slap shot on the power play at 19:01, granting Toronto a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first.
Carolina faced an early obstacle when rookie defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault suffered a hand injury after a collision with Toronto's Nicholas Robertson at the end of the first period, sidelining him for the remainder of the match.
In the second period, Toronto initially extended their lead as Jake McCabe's pass set up Auston Matthews for a goal at 11:03, making it 4-2. Yet, the Hurricanes responded; Sean Walker struck from the blue line through traffic at 16:51, reducing Toronto’s lead to one goal.
Emerging from the second intermission, Carolina was eager to flip the script. Taylor Hall found the equalizer at 3:20 by quickly reacting to a loose puck in front of the net. The Hurricanes dominated possession, creating numerous scoring opportunities.
At 12:13, Logan Stankoven delivered the game-winner after a Toronto turnover led to a 4-on-3 rush, firing a wrist shot past Hildeby for a 5-4 lead that the Hurricanes would maintain.
Carolina controlled the last 20 minutes, outshooting Toronto 22-2 in the third period, with overall shots on goal totaling 47-20. This showcased their offensive strength and resilience. Despite Toronto's late attempts, Carolina's defense held firm to secure the victory.
This win marks the Hurricanes' fourth in a row, showcasing their strong start to the season. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour commended his team's resilience, especially their ability to recover after trailing.
Conversely, the Maple Leafs’ second consecutive loss underscored their defensive shortcomings. Even with solid performances from Nylander and Matthews, the team struggled to maintain their early-game intensity against a steadfast Hurricanes team.
