The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally addressed the ongoing Asia Cup trophy issue during ICC Board meetings in Dubai, reigniting interest in a dispute that has puzzled the cricket community for over a month.
India secured the Asia Cup title following a victory against Pakistan on September 28 in Dubai. However, weeks later, the team is still without their trophy, which is reportedly secured by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also leads the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Constructive Discussions Held
According to sources, conversations at the ICC meeting were respectful yet insistent. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia represented India, stating that the trophy “rightfully belongs to the Indian team” and should be transferred immediately. He clarified that this matter transcends politics and revolves around the respect deserved by the players and the integrity of the sport.
The trophy is allegedly housed in the ACC's Dubai office, with restrictions on its movement pending Naqvi's authorization.
ICC Offers to Intervene
The ICC has proposed mediation if necessary, suggesting the formation of a special panel to expedite the resolution process. Several ICC board members reportedly expressed concern that withholding a championship trophy could damage the sport's perceived integrity and governance.
Notably, Naqvi's presence at the meeting was uncertain until the last minute. He has been absent from various ICC events in recent months, yet he arrived in Dubai just in time for the discussions, further complicating the situation.
Origins of the Dispute
The controversy originated during the trophy presentation on the night of the final. Players from India reportedly declined to accept the trophy directly from Naqvi due to his position as Pakistan’s interior minister, citing political sensitivities. Soon after, the trophy was discreetly removed from the stage, leading to confusion and speculation.
In the subsequent weeks, BCCI sent formal requests to the ACC for the trophy return but received no replies. The Indian board has now affirmed that they will not accept the trophy from Naqvi under any circumstances.
The Cricket Community Awaits Resolution
As the ICC prepares to mediate, both fans and players hope for a dignified resolution to the situation. India's Asia Cup win stands uncontested, yet the elusive trophy has transformed a moment of celebration into a diplomatic dilemma.
