Daryl Mitchell Tops ODI Rankings as ICC Updates

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Daryl Mitchell from New Zealand now stands as the top player in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, dethroning India’s Rohit Sharma from his long-held number one position. This ascent followed Mitchell's stellar performance, where he scored a century in the first ODI against the West Indies, achieving his seventh ODI century and earning the top spot for the first time in his career.

Mitchell is now the second New Zealand player to reach the number one ranking, following in the footsteps of the legendary Glenn Turner, who achieved this in 1979. Notably, other eminent Kiwi players like Martin Crowe, Kane Williamson, and Ross Taylor have made their mark in the top five over the years, but only Turner and Mitchell have held the coveted No.1 title.

The recent 3-0 ODI series victory for Pakistan over Sri Lanka has also led to notable changes in player standings. Mohammad Rizwan has moved up five places to join the 22nd position, while Fakhar Zaman has seen a similar improvement, now tied for 26th among ODI batters. Additionally, spinner Abrar Ahmed has jumped 11 places to rank ninth, and pacer Haris Rauf has climbed five spots to be 23rd in the ODI bowling category, with Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan remaining at the top.

In Test cricket, the ongoing series between India and South Africa has caused shifts in the ICC Test rankings. Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s captain, has made his way into the top five for Test batters for the first time after scoring an unbeaten 55 in his team’s second innings. India’s Shubman Gill has improved two places to 11th despite an injury, while Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto moved up four spots to rank 34th following his century against Ireland. Mahmudul Hasan Joy saw a substantial leap of 19 places to 74th after his second Test hundred.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah has retained his status as the top bowler, taking six wickets during the first Test at Eden Gardens. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have both seen advancements, now placed 13th and 15th, respectively. From South Africa, Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer have also improved in the rankings, with Jansen breaking into the top five for Test all-rounders.

In the T20I arena, Tim Robinson and Devon Conway from New Zealand have climbed to 15th and jointly 48th, respectively, with bowler Jacob Duffy rising to second. Meanwhile, Pakistan players made strides in the T20I rankings following their tri-series matches against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka; Mohammad Nawaz improved four places to rank 27th for bowling and two spots to eighth for all-rounders, showing his all-around contributions in matches.

The latest updates in the ICC rankings illustrate the fierce competition present in international cricket across different formats. Players from New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and Bangladesh have made strides, and with emerging talents continuing to rise, the landscape of ODI, Test, and T20I rankings is evolving. Daryl Mitchell's ascent to the No.1 position emphasizes the growing prominence of New Zealand cricket on the global stage.

Looking ahead, as international cricket unfolds with key series and tournaments, player rankings are anticipated to continue being dynamic. Upcoming matches, including the World Cup and various bilateral series, will further affect ICC rankings across all formats, paving the way for promising players to ascend the global charts.
