The International Cricket Council (ICC) has established a committee to address the ongoing dispute between India and Pakistan following the Asia Cup 2025. This decision was fueled by concerns raised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the ICC Board meeting held on Friday.
With both nations firmly entrenched in their positions, the ICC appointed Pankaj Khimji, chairman of the Oman Cricket Board, to lead the committee, leveraging his well-known connections with both cricket boards and experience in mediation.
The situation escalated after the Asia Cup final when the chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, refrained from handing the trophy to Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. Reports indicate that the Indian team declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, citing his role as Pakistan’s Interior Minister. Instead, Suryakumar celebrated the victory symbolically with his teammates, leading to a diplomatic clash between the two boards.
Naqvi later suggested a trophy presentation to the BCCI at a ceremony in Dubai on November 10, but the offer was turned down. This issue was subsequently brought up during the ICC meeting by the BCCI.
Sources indicate that discussions were friendly, with representatives from Australia, England, and South Africa urging both parties to amicably resolve the incident. The ICC Board has decided to create a three-member panel to handle the trophy controversy and foster improved bilateral cricket relations.
Naqvi’s participation in the meeting was confirmed just before it started, following the rescheduling of a key Senate session in Pakistan.
