On Friday, more than 1,200 flights were grounded across the United States following an order from the Trump administration aimed at easing the workload on air traffic controllers, many of whom are working without compensation amid the prolonged federal government shutdown.
These flight reductions impact 40 major airports, including key locations in Atlanta, Newark, Denver, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles. The changes will unfold gradually, starting with a 4% reduction in capacity, potentially increasing to 10% next week if Congress does not reach an agreement.
Entering its sixth week, the shutdown has caused significant challenges for several federal agencies since federal funding expired on October 1, with many government workers either on furlough or working unpaid.
“This situation is unacceptable. We deserve better,” stated American Airlines CEO Robert Isom, urging lawmakers to find an expedited solution.
Overall, 3% of U.S. flights were canceled on Friday, though 94% of departures remained on schedule. The hardest-hit locations include Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Denver, and Phoenix.
Sean Duffy, U.S. Transportation Secretary, attributed the ongoing shutdown to Democratic opposition, encouraging votes for a temporary funding solution. However, with Republicans controlling Congress and Democrats rejecting budget plans featuring healthcare cuts, the deadlock continues.
Travelers nationwide are feeling the pressure, with one passenger at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Werner Buchi, expressing concerns: “If this continues until Thanksgiving, things are going to get serious.”
Airlines have started adjusting their schedules in response:
American Airlines: 220 daily cancellations
Delta Air Lines: Approximately 170 flight cancellations
Southwest Airlines: About 100 flights grounded
On Thursday, numerous flights experienced delays, and lengthy security lines were reported across the country.
Despite the challenges, officials reaffirm the safety of air travel. “Flying remains safe today, tomorrow, and beyond due to our proactive measures,” Duffy reassured the public.
Nevertheless, as the Thanksgiving travel period approaches, worries grow as unpaid air traffic controllers and airport personnel experience heightened stress, sometimes resorting to calling in sick or seeking second jobs to cope.
