India created history as the national squash team won its first-ever World Cup title with a 3-0 victory over Hong Kong in the final held in Chennai on December 14. Playing in front of a lively home crowd, the Indian team displayed excellent teamwork, focus, and strategy to defeat the pre-tournament favourites. Veteran Joshna Chinappa set the tone in the opening match, showing experience and composure to beat Ka Yi Lee 7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1 in 23 minutes. Despite Lee raising her intensity in the middle games, Joshna held her nerve and finished the match strongly, giving India the early lead.
Following her win, Abhay Singh dominated in the second match, defeating reigning Asian champion Alex Lau in straight games 7-1, 7-4, 7-4, further strengthening India’s advantage. The final point was sealed by Anahat Singh, who displayed remarkable maturity and precision to beat Tomato Ho 7-2, 7-2, 7-5 in just 16 minutes, ensuring a clean 3-0 sweep for India.
The triumph marks India’s best performance in the Squash World Cup, surpassing their previous bronze medal finish in 2023. Hong Kong also recorded its best-ever result, improving on their previous bronze medal. The win was celebrated by fans at the venue, with the Indian players’ tactical discipline and calmness under pressure widely praised.
India’s coach Harinder Singh described the victory as a proud moment for the team and for squash in the country, highlighting the team’s ability to perform in high-pressure situations. Joshna Chinappa, reflecting on her performance, called it one of her career’s top five achievements and said winning at home made it even more special. This historic triumph is expected to boost the popularity of squash in India and inspire the next generation of players.
