During a session at the United Nations Security Council, India expressed strong condemnation of Pakistan, dismissing its ongoing assertions regarding Jammu and Kashmir while critiquing Pakistan's record on terrorism and governance.
In the open debate themed around “Leadership for Peace,” India’s UN representative, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, are inseparable parts of India. He emphasized that these territories will forever belong to the nation.
Ambassador Parvathaneni highlighted Pakistan’s persistent obsession with undermining India, arguing that Pakistan misuses international platforms to bring up settled issues, masking its own internal crises.
Addressing the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, India clarified that this step was necessitated by Pakistan's history of supporting cross-border terrorism. The ambassador pointed out that the treaty was established in good faith 65 years ago, yet Pakistan has repeatedly violated its spirit through aggression and terrorism.
India emphasized the human toll of terrorism, noting the loss of tens of thousands of lives in Pakistan-backed assaults over the past four decades, including a recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including a foreigner.
Given this context, India declared the hold on the Indus Waters Treaty would continue until Pakistan conclusively ceases all forms of terrorism. It labeled Pakistan as a global terrorism hub, asserting that ongoing violence hinders cooperation.
The Indian envoy sharply criticized Pakistan’s democratic practices, referring to the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the prohibition of his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He described these actions as a constitutional coup, citing the 27th amendment that granted lifetime immunity to the Chief of Defence Forces of Pakistan, Asim Munir.
India reiterated its commitment to combatting terrorism sponsored by Pakistan with unyielding strength, highlighting its role in safeguarding national security and its citizens from external threats.
These remarks followed accusations from Pakistan’s representative, who again labeled Jammu and Kashmir as an unresolved matter and criticized India's treaty suspension. Pakistan maintains that lasting peace in South Asia hinges on resolving the Kashmir issue, while alleging India’s breach of international obligations.
India flat-out rejected these allegations, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal affair and that Pakistan has no legitimate grounds to challenge its sovereignty. The Indian delegation posited that Pakistan’s efforts to internationalize this issue were misdirected attempts to divert attention from its own shortcomings.
This exchange underscored the significant diplomatic rift between India and Pakistan at the United Nations, with India firmly defending its stance on Kashmir, terrorism, and regional stability.
