In a significant move to enhance its maritime security and defense collaboration, India has finalized a deal worth Rs 7,995 crore (approximately USD 946 million) with the United States. This sustainment package is aimed at upgrading the operational capabilities of India's MH-60R "Seahawk" helicopter fleet, and it has been officially approved by the Ministry of Defence.
The agreement will provide support for 24 MH-60R helicopters manufactured by Lockheed Martin, which India procured under a Foreign Military Sales agreement back in 2020. Approximately 15 of these helicopters have already been inducted into the Indian Navy. The MH-60R Seahawk serves various roles as a maritime helicopter, capable of carrying out anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, search-and-rescue missions, and operations from naval vessels or coastal facilities.
As stated by the US State Department, this sustainment package is designed to improve helicopter availability and minimize maintenance time, thereby ensuring efficient operation from both coastal stations and naval ships. Additionally, it promotes the establishment of local maintenance capabilities, reducing reliance on foreign service support and allowing for seamless integration into India's maritime operations.
The MH-60R comes equipped with advanced long-range sensors and weaponry, including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, lightweight torpedoes, and machine guns. Its anti-submarine tools, consisting of dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and Mk-54 torpedoes, make it highly effective in submarine detection, securing sea lanes, and supporting carrier strike groups.
Affectionately termed "Romeo," the MH-60R Seahawk is extensively utilized by the US Navy and allied nations, undertaking versatile operations like maritime reconnaissance, search-and-rescue missions, medical evacuations, and ship-based operations. The Indian Navy has bolstered its own capabilities with the commissioning of its MH-60R squadron, INAS 334, at INS Garuda in Kochi.
This Rs 7,995 crore agreement is a landmark achievement in India-US defense relations, positioning the Indian Navy to better secure its maritime territory, address potential threats, and uphold stability in the strategically vital Indian Ocean region.
