India Falls Short Against Bangladesh 0-1 in Asian Cup Qualifier

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a disappointing turn of events, India faced a 0-1 defeat against Bangladesh on Tuesday during a Group C match for the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Taking place at the National Stadium in Dhaka, the encounter attracted a spirited crowd. Although the match didn't affect qualification—as both nations were already out of contention—it held significant emotional weight. This marked India's first loss to Bangladesh in two decades, making it a pivotal moment in the history of South Asian football.

Bangladesh initially seized the advantage in the 11th minute, with Sheikh Morsalin netting the decisive goal, igniting jubilation among the home supporters. Caught off-guard, the Indian defense faltered, allowing Bangladesh to capitalize on the opportunity. Following the goal, Bangladesh displayed confidence, while India struggled to establish their flow during the first half.

A significant chance arose for India in the 31st minute when Bangladesh's goalkeeper Mitul Marma was out of position, providing Lallianzuala Chhangte a clear shot. Yet, Hamza Choudhury intervened with a critical header to prevent India from scoring an equalizer.

A brief scuffle occurred near the touchline in the first half, but the referee quickly managed to quell tensions and restore order. Emotions ran high as India fought to avert a historic defeat while Bangladesh endeavored to maintain their rare lead.

Since their last loss to Bangladesh in the 2003 SAFF Gold Cup, where India lost 2-1 in Dhaka, they had played nine encounters, with India victorious three times and the rest ending in draws. This recent defeat marked the end of India's long-standing dominance.

India's qualifier campaign had already faltered on October 14, following a 1-2 defeat to Singapore after initially leading 1-0. Presently, India occupies the bottom of the four-team table with just two points from five matches, failing to secure a win amid three losses and two draws.

Conversely, Bangladesh improved to five points from five matches, now placed third in the table. The previous encounter between the teams earlier this year ended in a 0-0 stalemate in Shillong.

Singapore triumphed over Hong Kong 2-1 on the same day, capturing the top position in Group C with 11 points, thereby securing their qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup. Hong Kong ranks second with eight points.

According to FIFA world rankings, India sits at 136 while Bangladesh is ranked 183.

India's final match in the qualifying round is scheduled against Hong Kong at home on March 31, 2026.

Lallianzuala Chhangte marked his 50th international appearance for India. Coach Khalid Jamil also introduced Mohammed Sanan and Lalremtluanga Fanai to the squad, both of whom contributed positively as substitutes.

In the second half, India pressed forward with greater determination. Mahesh Singh Naorem, substituting for Nikhil Prabhu, instantly impacted the game with his creativity. The team came close on several occasions, including a powerful header from Rahul Bheke and energetic runs from Rahim Ali.

Debutant Sanan also had his chances. In the 66th minute, he made a clever cut inside and attempted a shot, but the Bangladesh goalkeeper managed to save it. Moments later, Sanan provided an excellent cross to Brison Fernandes, who unfortunately headed wide.

While India pressed hard, Bangladesh launched counterattacks. In the 79th minute, Topu Barman tried a long-range shot, which Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved with a dive. Despite India's vigorous efforts in the closing stages, the resolute Bangladesh defense held firm to secure the victory.

Ryan Williams, an Australia-born forward, recently acquired his Indian passport and traveled with the team, though he did not participate in the match-day squad. He has received clearance from Football Australia but is still awaiting FIFA's approval.
