India Closes Visa Centre in Dhaka Amid Heightened Tensions

India Closes Visa Centre in Dhaka Amid Heightened Tensions

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On December 17, 2025, India shut down its Visa Application Centre in Dhaka due to increasing threats from radical factions in Bangladesh. This decision coincides with a surge in anti-India rhetoric and growing security worries, as the interim Bangladeshi government under Muhammad Yunus fosters closer relations with Pakistan. The closure emphasizes the delicate security and diplomatic landscape in South Asia, attracting global scrutiny regarding regional stability.

The Visa Application Centre at Jamuna Future Park officially closed at 2 PM on Wednesday, with applicants being informed that their appointments would be rescheduled. India operates 16 visa centres across Bangladesh, handling over two million applications annually. The State Bank of India oversees the process of application receipts on behalf of the country.

This move follows India's diplomatic protest to Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah, in New Delhi. Officials highlighted incendiary speeches and specific threats to India's territorial integrity. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs pointed out that extremist elements are attempting to disrupt diplomatic ties with false narratives.

Recently, Bangladeshi official statements targeting India's northeast have emerged, asserting that Dhaka would support efforts to undermine India's “Seven Sisters” area. These claims surfaced after an incident involving student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which anti-India groups have used to amplify their rhetoric. India has dismissed all allegations, asserting that it has never allowed its territory to be used against Bangladesh.

These developments complicate an already tense diplomatic relationship. Despite historically strong people-to-people and developmental ties, recent incidents underscore the difficulties of navigating security and diplomacy. The Indian government reiterated the importance of safeguarding missions and diplomatic offices in accordance with international standards.

Public and political reactions in both nations are being closely monitored. Analysts caution that ongoing radical comments and protests could escalate tensions, potentially impacting trade, travel, and regional cooperation. The visa centre's temporary closure reflects India's serious concern for the safety of its nationals and staff in Bangladesh.

This situation illustrates how domestic political changes influence bilateral relations in South Asia. Effective diplomatic engagements, regional security strategies, and proactive dialogue are vital to avert further escalation. Observers emphasize the necessity of maintaining secure diplomatic operations and open lines of communication for regional stability.

Recent updates suggest that India will keep a close watch on the situation in Dhaka and aims to engage with Bangladesh through diplomatic channels shortly. The visa centre's reopening will likely hinge on assurances from the interim government regarding the safety of Indian personnel and facilities. This incident underscores the intricate interplay between diplomacy, security, and public perception in an increasingly unpredictable regional context.
