India registered a dominant 61-run victory over Pakistan in a high-intensity T20 World Cup 2026 match at the R. Premadasa Stadium, securing its place in the Super 8 stage. Despite the defeat, Pakistan etched its name into the record books with a historic spin-bowling performance.
Batting first after Pakistan won the toss, the India national cricket team posted a competitive total of 175 for 7 on a challenging surface. Ishan Kishan led the charge with a blistering 77 off 40 balls, while captain Suryakumar Yadav added 32 and Shivam Dube contributed a quick 27 to strengthen India’s innings.
In response, the Pakistan national cricket team was bowled out for just 114 runs in 18 overs. India’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, never allowing Pakistan to settle during the chase.
Despite the loss, Pakistan created history by bowling 18 overs of spin in a single T20 World Cup innings, equalling the tournament record. Under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan relied heavily on slow bowlers — a strategy previously used by them at the same venue during the 2012 World Cup.
Saim Ayub was the standout bowler for Pakistan, picking up 3 wickets for 25 runs. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Tariq, and Salman Ali Agha also claimed one wicket each, but the overall bowling effort failed to contain India’s strong batting lineup.
Although the defeat was heavy, Pakistan remains in contention to qualify from Group A and will face Namibia in its final group-stage match. India and Pakistan could meet again later in the tournament, with potential clashes possible in the semifinals or final, both scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka.
India now holds a dominant record against Pakistan in T20 internationals, having won 13 of the 17 matches played between the two sides.
