In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 22-year-old Indian student from Alwar, Rajasthan has been located deceased after nearly three weeks of being missing in Russia. The student, Ajit Singh Chaudhary, was pursuing his MBBS at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa.
Ajit was last seen on October 19 when he left his hostel around 11 a.m., informing friends that he was going out to purchase milk. His absence prompted immediate action from his friends and the Indian community in Ufa, leading them to notify the local authorities about his disappearance.
After a prolonged search effort spanning 19 days, authorities found his body in a dam adjacent to the White River on Thursday. This news has left his family and friends in shock, igniting calls for a comprehensive investigation into what transpired.
Local officials indicated that Ajit’s clothes, shoes, and mobile phone were found near the riverbank shortly after he vanished, raising suspicions of potential foul play, although an official cause of death is yet to be announced.
Former Union Minister Jitendra Singh Alwar expressed his sorrow over this tragic event, calling it “suspicious and deeply troubling.” He requested a prompt investigation from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and assistance in repatriating Ajit's remains to India.
“Ajit was an ambitious and diligent student. His family invested significant hopes and sacrifices in his education abroad. The news of his demise is devastating for his entire community,” Singh conveyed in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The All India Medical Students’ Association (Foreign Wing) is also addressing the incident, confirming identification of the body by Ajit’s friends at the university. However, university authorities have yet to release an official comment.
Meanwhile, Ajit’s family is heartbroken and awaiting notification regarding the repatriation of his remains. The Indian Embassy in Moscow has been alerted and will provide assistance with the process.
This tragic incident raises alarms about the safety of Indian students abroad, particularly in less populated areas.
