A 24-year-old Indian student in the U.S. has tragically lost her life due to severe burn injuries sustained in a catastrophic house fire in Albany, New York. This incident has shaken the Indian community, with family members in India heartbroken over the unexpected loss.
The victim, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, was pursuing a Master’s degree in Albany. The Consulate General of India in New York expressed profound sorrow over her passing. They posted on X, stating they are “deeply saddened by Sahaja’s untimely death,” and that they are in contact with her family to ensure they receive all necessary support during this ordeal.
Fire Engulfs House
As reported by the Albany Police Department, the fire ignited early on December 4. Quick-response teams arrived promptly, but the structure was already engulfed in flames. Emergency responders were made aware that there were several individuals trapped within the two-story building.
Rescuers located four adults inside, delivering urgent medical care before transporting them to a hospital. Two were transferred to a specialized burn unit for extensive treatment. Despite medical intervention, Sahaja, who suffered burns over nearly 90% of her body, tragically did not survive.
The police kept her identity confidential until her family was informed. Subsequently, relatives confirmed the deceased as Sahaja Reddy Udumala.
Family Fundraiser for Repatriation
Her cousin, Rathna Gopu, initiated a fundraiser to assist with funeral costs, repatriation of Sahaja’s body to India, and other immediate family expenses. The fundraiser described Sahaja as a bright, dedicated individual who relocated to the U.S. with dreams for a successful future.
Gopu shared that Sahaja valiantly fought for her life after incurring severe burns. Despite ongoing medical attention, her health declined, culminating in complete organ failure.
“Sahaja was brimming with dreams, hope, and ambition. Our family is devastated by her sudden loss,” Gopu remarked, noting the unexpected emotional and financial burdens they now face while preparing to bring Sahaja back home.
The fundraiser has garnered over USD 109,000 of the USD 120,000 goal, with contributions from friends, students, and the broader Indian community in the U.S. and internationally.
Support from the Consulate
The Consulate General of India is working with local officials and Sahaja’s family to ensure a seamless completion of all necessary formalities.
The Indian community in Albany and across the nation mourns her loss, remembering Sahaja as a compassionate and warm-hearted individual who touched the lives of many.
