India's nuclear deterrent strategy appears to be advancing, as a recent Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report reveals that the nation has operationally deployed 12 nuclear warheads for the first time. This marks a crucial shift in India's persistent handling of its nuclear capabilities.
As of January 2026, the report estimates India's nuclear arsenal at about 190 warheads, representing a slight increase from the previous year. SIPRI highlights that India’s nuclear capabilities are evolving within a robust nuclear triad that includes land-based missiles, aircraft, and nuclear-powered submarine-launched missiles.
Traditionally, it was believed that India kept its nuclear warheads separate from their delivery systems during periods of peace. However, recent advancements, such as canister-based missile systems and sea-based deterrence missions, indicate that certain warheads may now be closely associated with launch platforms, thereby improving operational readiness.
The acknowledgment of 12 nuclear warheads as operationally deployed marks a significant threshold, shifting from a perspective of complete stockpiling. Experts posit that this evolution mirrors altered security dynamics in a complex regional landscape.
Despite these developments, India’s strategic doctrine remains anchored in its "No First Use" policy, indicating that nuclear weapons are intended solely for reprisal against a nuclear assault. Indian officials consistently assert that the nation's nuclear capabilities aim to create a credible deterrent rather than serve as an aggressive military option.
The report also underlines the increasing significance of India’s ballistic missile submarine fleet, which enhances second-strike capabilities. Sea-based systems are deemed one of the most resilient aspects of a nuclear arsenal, as submarines can stay undetected and continue to function during conflicts.
While SIPRI's findings have garnered global attention, there remains no formal announcement regarding any alteration in India’s declared nuclear doctrine. Analysts suggest that this reported deployment underscores an endeavor to bolster deterrence credibility while honoring the nation's commitment to strategic moderation and regional stability.
