Urgent Flood Relief: India Launches Operation Sagar Bandhu for Sri Lanka

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Colombo, Sri Lanka – In a pivotal humanitarian action, India has sent crucial relief supplies to Sri Lanka as the nation grapples with one of its most severe flooding crises in recent history. A C130 aircraft carrying vital food, sanitary items, and emergency aid arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo around 1:30 am, welcomed by officials from the Indian High Commission along with the Sri Lanka Air Force.

This relief operation is part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, initiated by India in response to the unprecedented crisis in Sri Lanka. Previously, some supplies were transported aboard the Indian Navy's aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and frontline vessel INS Udaigiri. The aid arrives as Sri Lankan authorities issue dire warnings about intensifying conditions in the Western Province, where elevated water levels in the Kelani and Attanagalu rivers have submerged large regions and disrupted everyday life.

The disaster's severity is alarming. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has reported 69 fatalities as of early Saturday, with 34 individuals still unaccounted for. More than 200,000 people from over 61,000 families have been impacted. The Central Province, especially Kandy, has recorded some of the highest casualty numbers, with local authorities fearing the actual toll may be significantly greater than reported. The Badulla district, located in the central hills, has also faced severe landslides, resulting in numerous missing and confirmed deceased individuals.

Cyclone Ditwah has compounded the emergency, leading rivers and reservoirs across the island to overflow. Authorities are urging people in high-risk zones to evacuate immediately. The Sri Lankan weather bureau predicts additional rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters in the coming 24 hours, even as the cyclone is anticipated to move away by late Saturday.

Power outages have impacted nearly 35 percent of the population, leaving around seven million individuals without electricity. Efforts to restore power services have been hampered by ongoing flooding and rain. Concurrently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences for the tragic loss of life, promising continued support and assistance from New Delhi as the situation develops.

This relief operation underscores a significant moment in India-Sri Lanka partnership during times of natural calamity, showcasing a rapid humanitarian response to one of Sri Lanka's most catastrophic flooding situations in recent years.
