The Indian U17 football squad is ready to kick off in the 2026 AFC Under-17 Men’s Asian Cup Qualifiers this Saturday at EKA Arena, Ahmedabad. Under the guidance of head coach Bibiano Fernandes, a 23-member team has been finalized to compete, with the top team from the qualifiers set to reach the final tournament in Saudi Arabia next year, which also serves as a route to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.
India faces four other teams in its group. Their opening match is against Palestine on November 22, followed by fixtures against Chinese Taipei on November 26, Lebanon on November 28, and Iran on November 30. Only the group champions will advance, making every match a decisive point for India.
The squad features a blend of skilled goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Goalkeepers Manashjyoti Baruah, Maroof Shafi, and Rajrup Sarkar will anchor the team's defense.
Defensive roles will be filled by Abhishek Kumar Mondal, Ankur Rajbagh, Indra Rana Magar, Korou Meitei Konthoujam, Lawmsangzuala, Md Aimaan Bin, and Shubham Poonia, a lineup that brings both agility and experience to the pitch.
The midfield consists of Dallalmuon Gangte, Denny Singh Wangkhem, Diamond Singh Thokchom, Mukundo Singh Ningthoujam, Nitishkumar Meitei Yengkhom, and Thonggoumong Touthang, tasked with balancing offensive and defensive duties to control the tempo of the matches.
The coaching staff is optimistic about the team's performance under pressure, aiming to utilize this tournament for the growth of young talents who might represent India in the future. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes emphasized teamwork, discipline, and strategy as key elements behind the selection of players based on fitness, skill, and potential.
The tournament also serves as a critical platform for India to showcase its youth talent on an international level, offering athletes a chance to adapt to varied styles and strategies from other countries. Fierce competition is anticipated, with every team eager to secure a place in the final tournament in Saudi Arabia.
These qualifiers are part of India's broader initiative to enhance youth football programs and prepare the next generation for world competitions. The eager squad has been training diligently to ensure they perform at their peak.
Football fans can look forward to thrilling encounters, as India strives to progress and establish its presence in the Asian football landscape. With the youth's fervor coupled with thorough preparation, India stands a solid chance against its competitors.
