Washington — Tension rose momentarily during a gathering at the White House led by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday when a man fainted right behind him while discussing the reduction in weight-loss drug costs. The event was suspended for nearly an hour until medical personnel confirmed the man’s well-being.
This incident unfolded while Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks detailed a new deal with the U.S. government aimed at cutting prices of leading weight-loss medications. The affected individual, who was reportedly a representative from a pharmaceutical firm, collapsed amid other executives and Trump administration officials near the president’s desk.
“Are you alright?” Ricks was heard inquiring as others around helped the man down. Reports suggest attendees had been on their feet for approximately 30 minutes in the warm Oval Office at the time of the incident.
Trump swiftly stood from his desk while medical staff responded to the situation. The individual was assessed by Mehmet Oz, Trump’s administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who later verified the man was okay.
“He got a bit light-headed… You saw him go down. He’s fine,” Trump remarked after the event resumed. “They just took him out, and he’s under medical supervision.”
Later, Ricks provided clarification during a press briefing, stating that the man, known as Gordon, was an Eli Lilly guest.
“He felt faint — it’s warm, and standing for a while in the Oval Office isn’t easy,” Ricks noted. “The White House medical team did a commendable job. He’s fine, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
During the same session, President Trump unveiled significant pricing agreements with pharmaceutical leaders Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. This initiative is designed to make widely-used GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Zepbound and Wegovy, more accessible to American patients.
“These companies have consented to provide their most sought-after weight-loss drugs at steep discounts,” Trump declared. “This will deliver relief for Americans who need access to these transformative medications.”
GLP-1 medications including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have gained immense popularity due to their effectiveness in weight loss, though their high costs — often over $1,000 monthly — have raised significant concerns about accessibility in the U.S.
This new agreement is part of Trump’s administration's effort to lower prices while mitigating tariff threats on the pharmaceutical industry.
