Indonesia Enhances Safety Protocols for Volcano Tourism

Indonesia Enhances Safety Protocols for Volcano Tourism

Post by : Shakul

Following the tragic eruption of Mount Dukono in North Maluku that resulted in the fatalities of two tourists from Singapore and an Indonesian, Indonesia is implementing tighter safety protocols for its volcano tourism activities. This unfortunate event has sparked significant concerns regarding the safety of visitors to these geological attractions.

The Ministry of Tourism has announced its commitment to enhancing collaboration with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and other relevant bodies to bolster emergency response systems, ensuring timely interventions during volcanic events. Authorities are keen on establishing a robust cooperative framework to deter future incidents.

Among the newly introduced measures, officials will closely engage with managers of natural tourist spots to tighten supervision at entry points of hiking trails. This ensures that visitors are barred from accessing restricted areas whenever a volcano is classified under Level II (Advisory) or Level III (Watch) alerts in accordance with Indonesia’s volcanic warning protocols.

Additionally, the government will perform audits on tour guides operating in volcanic territories. These assessments aim to confirm compliance with safety standards, preventing guides from leading tourists into perilous regions for photography or other risky endeavors.

The incident at Mount Dukono has been labeled a major setback for Indonesia’s tourism industry. The ministry expressed sorrow over the breach of designated danger zones and reiterated that ensuring visitor safety is paramount at all tourism sites.

As the nation with the highest number of active volcanoes globally, Indonesia attracts millions of visitors annually. While these natural wonders are vital to tourism, officials emphasized that strict compliance with safety measures is critical to safeguarding lives and maintaining public trust.

The government is optimistic that through enhanced monitoring, vigorous enforcement, and improved inter-agency coordination, the risks will be minimized, promising a safer experience for travelers heading to volcanic attractions across the nation.
