Rescue teams in Indonesia are searching for five people who remain missing after a large garbage pile collapsed at the country’s largest landfill, killing at least four.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Bantargebang landfill in Bekasi, near Jakarta, according to Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the local rescue agency. Heavy rain from Saturday evening likely caused the garbage stack to become unstable.
The collapse happened while some trucks were unloading waste, and a nearby food stall was also affected. Authorities believe the missing include truck drivers and scavengers, and there may be more people buried under the waste.
Four people survived the accident. Over 200 rescuers, including police and military personnel, along with 17 excavators, have been deployed since Monday morning to search for the missing.
Bantargebang landfill spans around 110 hectares and handles approximately 6,500–7,000 tonnes of waste every day.
