Indonesia is entering a period of mourning following the catastrophic floods in Sumatra. In a show of respect and solidarity, regions such as Jakarta and Bali have opted to cancel their New Year fireworks displays this week.
The recent floods and landslides across North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh have tragically resulted in the deaths of more than 1,100 individuals, with approximately 400,000 people displaced. Entire communities have been obliterated, while officials focus on the reconstruction of homes, bridges, and critical infrastructure, with recovery costs estimated at over $3.11 billion as reported by government sources.
Prasetyo Hadi, spokesperson for President Prabowo Subianto, remarked that the central government fully backs the decision made by local authorities to cancel the fireworks. He stressed that this decision reflects the nation's profound empathy and solidarity towards those affected. “It is correct because we have to show empathy and solidarity ... as a nation, that there are some who suffered from a disaster,” he conveyed to the media.
In Bali, police have officially banned all fireworks, and the local government in Jakarta has also prohibited fireworks displays in the city. Residents are encouraged to refrain from lighting fireworks, opting instead for a moment of respectful silence in honor of those impacted by the calamity.
Numerous areas in Sumatra remain under a state of emergency, as local and national bodies collaborate on rescue and relief initiatives. More than 20 villages have been entirely washed away, leaving thousands in urgent need of essentials, including shelter, food, and medical aid.
The government is prioritizing the restoration of vital infrastructure such as housing, roads, and bridges. Additionally, authorities are extending assistance to families displaced by the disaster while striving to restore normalcy in the most affected areas.
By canceling the celebrations, Indonesia aims to pay tribute to the victims of this tragic natural disaster, while concentrating efforts and resources on recovery initiatives. This decision has found widespread approval as a powerful symbol of national unity and compassion in these trying times.
