Indonesia and Saudi Arabia have agreed to deepen tourism cooperation as both nations look to strengthen travel ties, increase visitor exchanges and unlock new opportunities in the tourism sector. The discussions took place during the 126th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in Toledo, Spain, where officials from both countries reviewed the progress of their existing partnership and explored future areas of collaboration.
Indonesia's Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, described Saudi Arabia as one of Indonesia's most important partners in the Middle East and emphasized the country's commitment to expanding cooperation in tourism. She noted that stronger collaboration could help boost economic growth, cultural exchange and tourism development in both countries while creating new opportunities for businesses and travelers.
A key focus of the talks was increasing the number of Indonesian visitors traveling to Saudi Arabia for both religious and leisure purposes. Officials discussed ways to enrich the travel experience of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims by encouraging them to explore destinations beyond the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The initiative is expected to help diversify tourism experiences while supporting the growth of Saudi Arabia's tourism industry.
At the same time, Indonesia is preparing to welcome more tourists from Saudi Arabia. To support this goal, the Indonesian government has proposed establishing an Arabic Language and Hospitality Center at the Lombok Tourism Polytechnic in West Nusa Tenggara. The center would help improve language skills and hospitality services for Arabic-speaking visitors, ensuring a more comfortable and culturally tailored experience.
Saudi Arabia's Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb, highlighted the strong religious and cultural connections between the two nations. He stated that both countries share deep historical ties built on faith, mutual respect and cultural understanding. According to him, tourism provides an effective platform for strengthening those relationships while creating economic opportunities for local communities and businesses.
The two sides also reviewed the implementation of the existing Memorandum of Understanding on tourism cooperation and discussed new initiatives aimed at promoting tourism investment, destination marketing, workforce development and sustainable tourism practices. Officials expressed confidence that these efforts would contribute to long-term growth and stronger tourism links between the two countries.
As international travel continues to recover and expand, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are positioning themselves to benefit from increasing tourism demand. Both governments believe that enhanced cooperation will lead to higher visitor numbers, stronger people-to-people connections and greater economic benefits, reinforcing the importance of tourism as a bridge between cultures and nations.
