In a groundbreaking initiative, Abu Dhabi has launched the world’s first modular smart vehicles, marking a significant advancement in urban mobility. These cutting-edge vehicles are engineered to connect and disconnect based on passenger demand, aiming to revolutionize transportation in the emirate.
This announcement emerged during DRIFTx 2025, a key event of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, underscoring the city’s ambition as a global leader in innovative mobility solutions. Created by NExT, these adaptable vehicles tackle congestion and lower carbon emissions without necessitating new infrastructure.
The hallmark of modular smart vehicles is their versatility. They can be joined together to cater to larger passenger groups or be utilized separately for individual commutes, enhancing traffic flow and serving as an effective option for first- and last-mile transport needs. This responsive system aims to boost roadway efficiency while promoting environmentally friendly transit.
A pilot program will be launched on Yas Island, in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub. This testing phase will demonstrate the practical application of the vehicles and guide a broader deployment throughout the city.
Additionally, these vehicles set the groundwork for the development of future smart operational systems and autonomous driving technologies, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s vision for a comprehensive, intelligent transport network.
Through deploying modular smart vehicles, Abu Dhabi is redefining road transport and establishing a new international benchmark for sustainable, adaptable, and efficient urban mobility.
