Teplitsky criticized governmental inaction in ensuring the protection of Jewish Australians, lamenting that the community feels overlooked in a country once seen as a sanctuary from hatred. She shared the story of her father, Semyon, 86, who sustained severe injuries during the assault and currently faces multiple surgeries with the risk of losing a leg.
The surge in antisemitic incidents over the last sixteen months has prompted the head of Australia’s intelligence agency to label antisemitism as the primary domestic threat. Teplitsky recounted how synagogues have faced vandalism and attacks, mentioning a 2024 arson incident in Melbourne which, while not fatal, sent a stark warning to the Jewish community.
The international aspect of the situation has gained attention, with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticizing Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for not taking stronger action against antisemitism. In response, Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution, announcing measures aimed at countering hate speech, banning Nazi salutes, and allocating funding for the protection of Jewish community groups.
