Instagram Adds Reposts and Map Feature Faces Copying Criticism

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Meta, the company that owns Instagram, has launched new features for the app. These include the ability to repost other people’s content, use a location-sharing map, and a refreshed “Friends” section. These updates aim to help users connect better and discover new content. However, many users on social media are criticizing the changes. Some believe Instagram is trying too hard to copy other popular apps like TikTok and Twitter.

What Is the New Reposting Feature?

Instagram has added a repost feature that allows users to share public reels and feed posts from others directly to their followers. When you repost a reel or post, it shows up in a new tab called “Reposts” on your profile. These reposted items can also appear in the feed of people who follow you. This helps you share your favorite content with your community easily.

For content creators, reposting can be helpful too. If someone shares their post or reel, it might reach new people, even those who don’t follow them. This increases the visibility of their content and helps grow their audience.

How to Repost on Instagram

Instagram has made reposting very simple. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Tap the repost icon on any public reel or post.

  • A thought bubble will appear, where you can write a short note if you want.

  • Tap save to complete the repost.

Once you repost, the content will appear in your new “Reposts” section, and your followers may see it in their feed.

What Is the Instagram Map Feature?

Another big update is the new Instagram Map. This feature allows users to see what their friends are doing based on location. For example, if your friend posts something from a beach or a restaurant, it can show up on the map. This way, users can explore fun places, see what’s popular, and find interesting content tied to real-world locations.

This map can also help users discover content from creators they like. If a creator shares something from a famous location, you can check it out on the map and see what they’re posting from there. It adds a new way to connect and explore on Instagram.

Why Instagram Made These Changes

Meta says these changes are part of their goal to help users connect better and share more easily. They want to make Instagram a place where users can find useful content, keep up with friends, and enjoy more features without leaving the app.

By allowing reposts and adding a map, Meta hopes to encourage more interaction and give creators more ways to grow their audience. It’s also a way to keep up with other popular social media apps, which are offering similar features.

Social Media Users React with Criticism

Despite the goals behind the update, many users online are not happy. People have gone to platforms like X (previously Twitter) to share their opinions. A lot of them think Instagram is simply copying ideas from other apps.

One user wrote, “First it was Stories (Snapchat), then Reels (TikTok), now reposts (Twitter). Instagram’s whole personality is borrowed.” Another added, “Instagram wanna be TikTok so bad you can repost reels now .”

This criticism is not new. In the past, Instagram faced similar backlash when it introduced Stories, a feature very much like what Snapchat offered. Later, they launched Reels, which was seen as a copy of TikTok’s short video format. Now with reposts, people are saying it feels like Twitter’s retweet feature or TikTok’s repost option.

What Is the TikTok Repost Feature?

The repost feature on TikTok allows users to share other people’s videos with their followers, just like a retweet on X. However, the reposted videos on TikTok do not appear on your profile. Instead, they show up in your followers’ “For You” feed, which means they are still highly visible but don’t take up space on your main page.

Instagram seems to be doing something similar, but with the added option of creating a “Reposts” tab on your profile. This could be a way to let people track what others are sharing, while still making the reposts visible to others.

Is Instagram Losing Its Originality?

With all these new changes, a big question is being asked: Is Instagram losing its identity? Many social media users think Instagram has stopped being original. Instead of creating fresh ideas, the platform is being accused of copying features from other successful apps.

For example:

  • Stories was first seen on Snapchat.

  • Reels is very similar to TikTok videos.

  • Reposts feel like a mix of Twitter’s retweet and TikTok’s repost.

  • Now, a location map feels close to Snapchat’s Snap Map.

These moves make some users feel that Instagram is no longer unique and is instead trying too hard to be like everyone else.

Will the New Features Succeed?

Even with the criticism, the new features might still become popular. Many users, especially creators, like having more ways to share content and reach more people. Reposting can help good content travel farther, and the map can make Instagram more fun for exploring places.

Still, Meta will need to listen to feedback from its users. If people feel that the app is trying too hard to copy others, it could hurt Instagram’s reputation in the long run.

Instagram’s new updates — reposting, a location-sharing map, and a refreshed friends section — are meant to make the app more social and content-rich. But while these features can be useful, many users believe Instagram is losing its original charm by copying ideas from apps like TikTok, Snapchat, and X.

Whether these features become widely accepted or rejected depends on how people use them and how Instagram continues to balance innovation with originality.
