Intel Refutes Trade Secret Leak Allegations from TSMC

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Intel has rebutted allegations that one of its executives, Wei-Jen Lo, leaked proprietary information from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This controversy has captured attention in the semiconductor sector, given the stature of both firms in advanced chip technology.

In its legal filing, TSMC indicated it has taken the matter to Taiwan’s Intellectual Property and Commercial Court, asserting a “high probability” that Lo shared or transferred trade secrets following his departure from TSMC, where he was employed for 21 years prior to joining Intel last October.

Reacting to the allegations on Thursday, Intel insisted that it sees no basis for the claims. The company noted its stringent policies forbidding employees from disclosing confidential information from former employers, emphasizing the serious nature of these policies.

Lo has yet to publicly address the accusations.

In its defense, Intel described Lo as a well-regarded leader within the semiconductor community, citing his technical expertise and reputation. The company also pointed out that talent mobility across organizations is beneficial for the sector.

Lo spent 18 years at Intel before joining TSMC in 2004, where he played a pivotal role in developing cutting-edge chip technologies, including the firm’s 5-nanometre, 3-nm, and 2-nm production capabilities.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to support the review of this case to assess potential breaches regarding core technologies and national security laws.

The inquiry is ongoing, with further developments anticipated as the situation unfolds.
