US Investigation Targets Shein and Temu Over Labour Concerns

US Investigation Targets Shein and Temu Over Labour Concerns

Post by : Meena Hassan

US fast-fashion brands Shein and Temu are currently facing intensified investigations after prominent lawmakers urged action against allegations of forced labor, intellectual property infringement, and the distribution of unsafe products.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton initiated an investigation into Shein, which follows similar actions being taken in Europe. Additionally, Senator Tom Cotton has called for a federal inquiry into both brands, labeling them as “Communist Chinese” platforms that undermine American businesses through IP theft.

Shein has responded by expressing its commitment to addressing these issues and cooperating fully with the state investigation. The company, based in Singapore, predominantly sources its products from China. In contrast, Temu has yet to release any public statements on the matter.

Cotton noted that recent changes in US regulations, which revoke the longstanding tariff exemption for inexpensive imports, have resulted in millions of packages from China remaining in warehouses, creating a “golden opportunity” for federal oversight. He further accused Temu of offering counterfeit products and alleged that Shein replicates designs from US brands at lower costs.

Paxton's investigation will delve into Shein's practices surrounding forced labor, the use of unsafe materials, misleading marketing, and data collection methods. He emphasized the need to protect Americans from “cheap, dangerous, foreign goods.”

Moreover, both companies find themselves under increased scrutiny in Europe, with Shein facing pressure to halt sales of childlike sex dolls and weapons, and Temu being probed in France for exposing harmful content to younger users.

These actions reflect a wider trend of regulatory measures aimed at foreign digital and retail platforms, including recent legal actions regarding safety violations against Roblox.
