South Korea has been rocked by a significant cybercrime incident whereby over 120,000 surveillance cameras belonging to homes and businesses have been compromised. These hacked devices recorded video footage from personal spaces, leading to the creation and distribution of exploitative sexual content online.
Authorities have apprehended four individuals implicated in this extensive operation. Investigators report that the suspects primarily targeted affordable IP cameras popular among households and small enterprises that often use default or simplistic passwords, making them easy targets.
The compromised cameras were located in areas where individuals assumed their privacy was assured, including private rooms, karaoke lounges, Pilates studios, and even a gynecological clinic. Revelations from the investigation highlighted the extensive nature of the operation, with one suspect reportedly breaching 63,000 cameras and producing 545 illicit videos, generating approximately 35 million won (₹21 lakh). Another individual compromised 70,000 cameras, selling 648 videos for 18 million won (₹10.8 lakh).
Collectively, these two suspects made up nearly 62% of the unlawful videos posted on a specific website within the past year.
Victims have been identified across at least 58 different sites. Police are working to help these individuals reset their passwords, safeguard their devices, and eliminate the unauthorized content from online platforms. Authorities are urging all IP camera users to immediately update their passwords and remain vigilant against suspicious activities.
This event has emerged shortly after another significant cyberattack in the nation, which resulted in the exposure of personal information belonging to over 33 million users during a data breach involving Coupang, one of South Korea's leading e-commerce services. This breach has been labeled the most severe data leak the country has experienced in over a decade.
Both incidents have raised serious concerns regarding digital security, especially as more individuals depend on connected devices that may lack adequate protection.
