IPL 2026 to Commence on March 26: RCB Leads Off, Auction Buzzes

Post by : Meena Hassan

Get ready, cricket enthusiasts! The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is all set to launch from March 26 to May 31, with the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), taking center stage to kick off the tournament. However, there’s a cloud of uncertainty over RCB's home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, following a tragic stampede during their previous title celebrations. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is reportedly waiting for the state government’s final nod to proceed with games, contingent on adhering to stringent safety measures.

The IPL 2026 auction is lined up for Tuesday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, marking the third year in a row that the event will occur outside Indian soil, following earlier editions hosted in Dubai (2024) and Jeddah (2025). With ten franchises eager to enhance their rosters, anticipation runs high for an auction filled with competitive bidding for top players as teams gear up for the trophy.

A total of 77 player positions are available, including 31 reserved for international talent. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lead the pack with 13 openings, followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with ten. The player selection is packed with talent: from a shortlist of 1,355, 359 have made the cut, featuring 244 Indian players and 115 international talents.

Cameron Green, the Australian all-rounder, is now under the spotlight, poised to command the highest bids due to his diverse skill set and high demand in this auction. Expectations run high for his base price to soar past ₹25 crore, securing him as the leading attraction. Other key players drawing attention include Ravi Bishnoi, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Matt Henry, Tim Seifert, David Miller, and Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lankan pacer just released by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Ahead of the auction, the BCCI has also added 19 new names, including talents like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ben Sears, and Ethan Bosch, paving the way for franchises to build robust squads. Expect teams to splurge as they aim to find the perfect balance between celebrity players and emerging prospects.

With IPL 2026 promising thrilling cricket, fierce rivalries, and a captivating auction, spectators can look forward to exhilarating moments and surprises on the pitch. The clock is ticking as all eyes turn to Abu Dhabi, where franchises will vie not only for players but for supremacy in the highly celebrated T20 league.
