Iran Requests Visa Guarantees for Team Melli Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Post by : Shweta

The football federation of Iran has called for visa guarantees for players and staff affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is likely to heighten political tensions leading up to the event in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This has emerged as one of the most significant off-pitch controversies related to the forthcoming tournament.

Confirming that Team Melli, Iran's national football team, will certainly compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, federation president Mehdi Taj stated that assurances are needed from the host countries to ensure all athletes, coaches, and officials—especially those who served in the IRGC—can secure visas without issues.

This demand arises during a sensitive period, as both the United States and Canada officially label the IRGC as a terrorist organization. This classification raises fears that individuals associated with the IRGC could encounter travel obstacles or visa refusals during the tournament.

Reports from Iranian media indicate that Mehdi Taj emphasized the necessity for FIFA to guarantee that Iranian participants are treated with dignity throughout the competition. Iran has also asked for assurances on the safety of its delegation, respectful recognition of the Iranian flag and anthem, and freedom from political bias during the tournament.

The situation intensified when Canadian authorities barred entry to Mehdi Taj before a FIFA Congress in Vancouver due to supposed affiliations with the IRGC. Iranian officials condemned this action as disrespectful and raised the issue with FIFA leadership directly. Subsequently, FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom reportedly conveyed regret over the incident and invited Iranian football delegates for discussions in Zurich.

A major worry for Iran is the status of national team captain Mehdi Taremi, who allegedly completed military service related to the Revolutionary Guard. In Iran, military duty is mandatory, and conscripts may be assigned to various forces, including the army, police, or IRGC. Iranian representatives argue that such service should not hinder athletes from participating in the tournament.

The political landscape surrounding Iran’s involvement in the World Cup has become increasingly convoluted amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington earlier this year. Reports suggest that Iran is still subject to travel limits enacted during the Trump administration, while diplomatic ties remain tense following recent regional disputes and ceasefire talks.

Notwithstanding these challenges, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed Iran’s participation in the tournament, where the nation is placed in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Team Melli is set to start its World Cup journey against New Zealand in Inglewood, California.

Football analysts point out that this scenario accentuates the difficulties FIFA faces in extricating politics from global sports. Although FIFA promotes the World Cup under the theme “Football Unites the World,” political conflicts, immigration regulations, and international security issues continue to complicate preparations for the 2026 tournament.
