Iran Prepares for 2026 World Cup in the USA

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Iran has affirmatively stated that its national football team is ready for a “proud and successful” engagement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States.

Speaking on state television, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohejerani revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has officially declared the team’s readiness for the event, following directives from the sports minister.

Initially, Iran's participation was uncertain due to heightened military tensions in the region earlier this year. However, officials have confirmed that preparations are now in full swing.

FIFA has consistently affirmed that Iran will adhere to the official World Cup calendar, dismissing any suggestions to shift Iran’s matches to alternate locations, such as Mexico.

During a meeting on March 31 in Turkey with Iranian football officials and players, FIFA President Gianni Infantino provided assurance for Iran’s preparation assistance, including support for an external training camp.

Despite the ongoing conflict leading to the suspension of Iran’s domestic football league, the national squad has recently restarted training sessions in Tehran, as illustrated in official social media posts.

Iran is set to compete in the group stages in the USA, where it will meet New Zealand and Belgium at the Inglewood stadium in Los Angeles, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle.

The squad plans to arrive in Tucson, Arizona for their training camp by June 10, in compliance with FIFA regulations necessitating early arrival prior to the competition.

A significant matter still needing resolution is the approval of U.S. visas for the Iranian delegation, including Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, who previously faced entry denial at the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
