Iran has strongly denied a recent report from the UN's nuclear watchdog (IAEA), which claimed that Iran’s supply of highly enriched uranium—close to weapons-grade—has grown by 50% in the past three months.
Iran's government said the report is biased, politically motivated, and based on false information. They also accused the IAEA of using fake documents provided by Israel and repeating baseless claims.
This development comes as Iran and the US are holding talks to revive the nuclear deal. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said his country is reviewing a proposal shared by Oman and will respond in line with national interests.
The IAEA report noted that Iran has now stockpiled over 408 kg of uranium enriched to 60%—an amount much higher than allowed under international agreements. The report also raised concerns about nuclear materials found at three secret sites.
Iran responded by saying it has cooperated with the IAEA and allowed access to all requested sites. The Iranian government emphasized again that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only and that it opposes nuclear weapons.
Araghchi, who leads Iran’s nuclear negotiations, said in a televised speech: “We also believe nuclear weapons are unacceptable.”
However, Western countries, including the US, UK, France, and Germany, may use this IAEA report to pressure Iran further and possibly take the issue to the UN Security Council.
Experts believe both Iran and the US are using this situation to strengthen their positions during the ongoing talks. Iran is advancing its nuclear program as a way to push for the removal of US sanctions, while the US may threaten more pressure if talks don’t succeed.
Iran still insists it has not made a decision to build a nuclear bomb.
