The Iraqi national football team is gearing up for the forthcoming World Cup playoffs, facing the winner of the contest between Bolivia and Suriname. Having secured their spot in these intercontinental playoffs by defeating the United Arab Emirates with a 3-2 aggregate score, Iraq's journey continues following a notable 2-1 victory in Basra on Tuesday.
Head coach Graham Arnold, who succeeded Jesus Casas in June, emphasized the necessity for a positive demeanor as the team readies itself for these crucial matches. “Staying positive and ensuring our preparations are thorough is essential,” Arnold remarked. He acknowledged the importance of off-field readiness, especially given that the playoffs will be hosted in Mexico, which presents a unique challenge for the squad.
Iraq's last appearance at the World Cup was in 1986 during the finals in Mexico, and this historical link serves as a strong motivator for players and coaching staff aiming for a chance to return to such a prestigious event after many years.
Bolivia, who placed seventh in South American qualifiers, is set to compete against Suriname for the right to face Iraq in the playoff. Though FIFA has yet to announce specific dates or venues for these matches, both teams are already ramping up their preparations. Arnold noted the significance of examining their opponents and grasping the unique challenges posed by playing in Mexico.
Arnold's extensive experience, including leading Australia to the 2022 World Cup through decisive victories over the UAE and Peru, is expected to be a key asset for Iraq. His ability to guide teams through high-pressure playoff scenarios will be crucial as they set their sights on qualifying for their second World Cup.
The team has responded positively to Arnold’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of physical conditioning, tactical drills, and mental preparedness. Recognizing the potential challenges from South American or Caribbean teams, Iraq’s players understand that resilience, discipline, and teamwork are vital.
The 2026 World Cup promises to be historic, expanding to 48 teams, thus presenting emerging football nations like Iraq with greater chances to shine on the global stage. This expanded field may pave the way for Iraqi football to gain renewed international traction and foster further development of the sport within the country.
Fans and officials are optimistic that Iraq can maintain the level of determination and skill showcased in their matches against the UAE. The team’s accomplishments in the recent Asian qualifiers reflect their potential to compete at advanced levels and exhibit composure under stress.
Arnold concluded, “We are determined, optimistic, and prepared to face whoever comes our way. Our objective is to excel, honor Iraqi football, and secure a place in the World Cup. Every detail is vital, and we are fully committed to this opportunity.”
With meticulous planning, seasoned coaching, and a driven squad, Iraq is primed to make a formidable effort to return to the World Cup stage and contend among the elite footballing nations in 2026.
