Ireland Investigates TikTok, LinkedIn, and X for Reporting Failures

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Ireland’s media authority has initiated formal probes into TikTok and LinkedIn, extending its scrutiny to Elon Musk’s platform X. This action comes as concerns escalate regarding the compliance of major social networks with European Union mandates that require user-friendly systems to report illegal content.

Last month, X was targeted by the regulator after reports indicated delays and inconsistencies in handling flagged unlawful content. Now, TikTok and LinkedIn are under similar examination, underscoring a broader initiative to ensure that online platforms prioritize user protection and adhere to legal standards.

According to EU regulations, digital service providers are mandated to implement accessible tools that enable users to report illegal content quickly. These rules are designed to enhance safety in the digital landscape while holding global social media companies accountable.

The Irish watchdog, which monitors platforms registered within its jurisdiction, is empowered to levy fines reaching up to 6% of a company’s annual global revenue if violations are identified. This enforcement capacity emphasizes the importance of compliance for tech giants operating throughout Europe.

These investigations reinforce the EU’s commitment to promoting transparency and user safety in digital environments, indicating that platforms must enhance their reporting systems to avoid serious penalties. Experts believe this may compel companies to rethink their reporting functionalities to align with legal requirements and user demands.
