On Thursday, Israel executed a fresh wave of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, hitting regions like Jbaa, Mahrouna, Majadal, and Baraasheet, amidst ongoing tensions with the Iran-supported group Hezbollah. The Israeli Defense Forces stated the strikes were aimed at Hezbollah's weapons storage sites, asserting that the group operates from civilian zones.
This military action followed a historic meeting a day earlier between Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives, their first in decades, facilitated by UN peacekeeping forces in Naqura. The conversations were aimed at enforcing the November 2024 ceasefire meant to halt over a year of conflict. Despite this ceasefire, Israel maintains its military presence in five crucial southern Lebanon areas, continuing its air operations.
The recent airstrikes were briefly tempered by the visit of Pope Leo XIV from Sunday to Tuesday, during which he called for an end to violence and stressed the humanitarian impact of the ongoing strife. However, the intensity of strikes resumed on Thursday, as Israel signaled plans to target additional Hezbollah military assets in southern territories.
Local officials reported extensive damage to civilian infrastructures. Yassir Madi, a local leader in Jbaa, stated, “everyone is living in shock,” indicating that nearly every window within a 300-metre radius of the strikes had shattered. Residents voiced that the attacks serve as a stark reminder of the region’s volatility.
The Israeli military justified its actions, claiming Hezbollah strategically places weapons among civilians, calling its operations targeted strikes based on military necessities.
Despite Lebanon's government pledging to disarm Hezbollah, the group has consistently resisted, provoking fears of increased Israeli military responses. President Joseph Aoun revealed plans for another round of discussions with Israel set for December 19, underscoring a preference for diplomatic solutions over conflict. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam clarified that these discussions focus solely on the ceasefire implementation, the release of Lebanese captives, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese soil.
Global stakeholders have been closely watching the situation. The United States has pressed Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah and foster direct communication between the two nations. US envoy Morgan Ortagus participated in the recent dialogue, which was also attended by representatives from France, the UN, and the ceasefire oversight committee. France affirmed its support for promoting de-escalation and stability in the area.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office referred to the recent talks as “positive,” highlighting an agreement to assess prospects for economic cooperation. However, Israel emphasized that any advancements hinge on the disarmament of Hezbollah. The political climate remains precarious, with Lebanon and Israel still technically at war since 1948 and diplomatic interactions tightly controlled.
The latest airstrikes emphasize the delicate peace in southern Lebanon, where civilian populations disproportionately suffer from military actions even as international efforts aim to sustain dialogue and avert further confrontations.
