The Italian government has strengthened its presence in the Gulf region through a series of agreements signed during Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa of Bahrain's visit to Rome. These accords cover economic, political, and space cooperation, marking a significant step in Italy’s long-term Gulf strategy. Following similar strategic engagements with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, Italy is now consolidating its partnership with Bahrain, blending diplomacy, trade, and security initiatives.
Strategic Investments and Industrial Cooperation
A key part of the agreements is a Strategic Investments and Collaboration Partnership, valued at over €1 billion. The initiative aims to boost trade, industrial exchanges, and technological collaboration between Italian and Bahraini companies. Projects under this agreement are expected to create concrete opportunities for Italian firms to participate in Bahrain’s ongoing development projects, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, digital innovation, and public–private collaborations.
Energy and Environmental Cooperation
Italy and Bahrain have signed a partnership focused on energy transition, environmental sustainability, and technological neutrality. The agreement addresses water management, waste-to-energy initiatives, research and development, and other eco-friendly technologies. Both countries aim to collaborate closely on solutions that support Bahrain’s energy security and environmental goals while allowing Italian companies to offer expertise and innovation.
Infrastructure and Smart City Initiatives
Cooperation extends to infrastructure, urban planning, and transport, aiming to develop smart cities in Bahrain. Italian companies are expected to contribute to construction projects, urban planning designs, and transport system innovations. This sector of collaboration reflects a long-term vision of sustainable urban development while strengthening trade and technical cooperation between the two nations.
Food Security and Agricultural Development
A separate agreement focuses on enhancing Bahrain’s food security and self-sufficiency. This includes collaboration on research, innovation, and agricultural development. Italy will assist in building a resilient agro-food supply chain and fostering institutional cooperation that improves local food production capabilities, ensuring long-term sustainability and stability.
Space Science Collaboration
Italy’s space agency (ASI) and the Bahrain Space Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in space sciences and applications. This includes knowledge-sharing, joint research projects, and training programs. The collaboration positions both countries to advance their capabilities in space exploration and applied technologies.
Trade and Customs Facilitation
To further strengthen economic ties, Italy and Bahrain have established a joint technical committee to streamline trade flows. This follows the bilateral customs agreement signed earlier in February, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing barriers to commerce between the two nations.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to supporting stability and peace in the Middle East. They expressed support for a two-state solution in Palestine, a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and unfreezing Palestinian funds. Cooperation also includes backing reconstruction in Syria and facilitating the voluntary return of refugees in coordination with UN agencies. Regarding Iran, both nations call for full compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty and renewed diplomatic engagement. Italy also stressed its support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The Meloni government continues to pursue a pragmatic, multi-level economic diplomacy in the Gulf. Italy’s partnership with Bahrain strengthens its role as a key European player in the region. With Bahrain set to assume the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) presidency in December, Italy’s engagement positions it as a central partner in upcoming EU–GCC initiatives, including the next summit scheduled in Riyadh in 2026.
The agreements signed between Italy and Bahrain reflect a broad, strategic approach that combines trade, infrastructure, energy, space, and regional political cooperation. This partnership strengthens bilateral relations while ensuring mutual benefits in economic growth, technological innovation, and regional stability, highlighting Italy’s proactive role in the Gulf.
