In an impressive debut for Jack Quinn, the Buffalo Sabres secured a 4-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday. Quinn's early power-play goal in the third period, coupled with two assists, marked a career-high three points, showcasing his potential. Meanwhile, goaltender Colten Ellis made 27 saves in his first NHL appearance, solidifying the Sabres' win and lifting their spirits after a challenging season start.
Buffalo's offensive line was on point throughout the match. Tyson Kozak found the net for the second consecutive game, Josh Doan netted his third goal in three games, and Jason Zucker added one before exiting due to an upper-body injury. Key contributions came from Conor Timmins and Ryan McLeod, each notching two assists, underscoring the team's collaborative effort.
The Red Wings were the first to score, with J.T. Compher netting a goal just three minutes into the second period. Dylan Larkin, the captain for Detroit, assisted on the goal, extending his point streak to seven games. Emmitt Finnie also contributed, scoring his third goal in two outings, providing a boost to his team's morale.
Buffalo quickly responded; Zucker scored from close range after a pass from Quinn, leveling the score at 1-1 at 11:37 of the second period. Shortly thereafter, Kozak put the Sabres ahead again at 2-1, thanks to Quinn's assist, only for Finnie to equalize with a swift backhand shot from Larkin.
The decisive moments came in the third period. Quinn's power-play strike from above the faceoff circles put the Sabres in front 3-2 at 4:15, successfully navigating a screened John Gibson. Just minutes later, Doan extended the lead to 4-2 with a shot from the left circle, effectively marking the end of the contest.
This win is significant for Buffalo, as they clinched three victories out of their last four games, rebounding from an initial 0-3-0 rough start. The defeat marked the end of Detroit's five-game winning streak, their first loss since a season-opening setback against the Montreal Canadiens on October 9.
Quinn's performance underlined his rising status as a vital offensive player for the Sabres, contributing essential scoring and playmaking that energized the squad. Ellis' steady and composed goaltending served as a backbone for the triumph. Despite notable individual performances from Larkin and Finnie for Detroit, they struggled to counter Buffalo's effective teamwork.
With vibrant hockey action from the outset, both teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle with numerous scoring opportunities. The Sabres' depth, particularly highlighted by Quinn, alongside contributions from Doan, Zucker, and Kozak, was pivotal in keeping the Red Wings at bay.
Looking ahead, the Sabres aim to sustain their winning streak while the Red Wings seek to bounce back and maintain their early-season momentum.
