Former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has announced his intention to back his eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, in the 2026 presidential election, as reported by sources within his political party. Valdemar Costa Neto, leader of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party, confirmed to Reuters that the senator received green light from the former president to pursue his candidacy.
Bolsonaro made this endorsement during a visit to the Brasilia federal police offices, where he is serving his sentence for attempting to incite a coup. This revelation has caused turbulence in Brazilian financial markets, leading to a 2 percent dip in the national currency against the U.S. dollar and a 3 percent decline in the main Bovespa stock index on Friday.
Investors had speculated a potential endorsement for a more experienced candidate better suited for market interests, like Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, who was once a minister under Bolsonaro. Analysts express concerns that Flavio's candidacy could be perceived as less robust compared to Tarcisio, which may unsettle investors.
Since June 2023, Bolsonaro has been prohibited from running for office after the federal electoral court condemned him for actions during the previous 2022 election. In September, he was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison due to coup plotting after his defeat by President Lula.
This endorsement highlights the continued influence of Bolsonaro in Brazil’s right-wing political arena. While Flavio's candidacy may galvanize the loyalty of his father’s supporters, it introduces a degree of uncertainty into the political climate as Brazil gears up for the 2026 elections. Observers suggest this could shift alliances and voter sentiments, especially within conservative circles closely tracking Jair Bolsonaro’s political legacy.
This situation casts a spotlight on Flavio Bolsonaro’s campaign strategies, his capability to connect with both his father’s core base and the wider electorate, and the hurdles he may face competing against President Lula. The former president’s decision to support a family member for such a significant political role draws global attention to Brazil’s multifaceted political landscape and the impact of familial political legacies on impending elections.
