Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has received a one-game suspension from the NFL due to an incident where he spat at an opponent. This decision was announced on Tuesday following the rejection of Chase’s appeal by hearing officer Jordy Nelson, appointed by both the league and the players union.
The suspension is a direct consequence of an altercation during the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which ended in a 34-12 victory for Pittsburgh. In the fourth quarter, after a physical exchange, Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey was ejected for striking Chase. While Chase faced no immediate penalty, a video later surfaced showing him spitting at Ramsey, prompting the NFL to investigate.
Chase's effort to contest the suspension was unsuccessful, with the hearing officer confirming the one-game ban—a historic move as it is the first suspension in NFL history for such behavior. Previous spitting incidents had resulted in fines rather than game suspensions.
He will be unavailable for the Bengals' next matchup against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Currently, Cincinnati sports a 3-7 record, while the Patriots stand at 9-2. Chase’s absence is likely to influence the team's offensive strategy, considering his pivotal role in their passing game.
Despite this setback, the 25-year-old receiver continues to shine this season, leading the NFL with 79 receptions and accumulating 861 receiving yards along with five touchdowns. In the prior game against Pittsburgh, he posted three catches for 30 yards.
In a standout 2024 season, Chase dominated receiving charts with a record 127 catches, 1,708 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of his first four seasons.
Since debuting with Cincinnati, Chase has played 72 games, starting in 71, and has compiled impressive stats with 474 receptions, 6,286 receiving yards, and 51 touchdowns. His suspension is a noteworthy disciplinary measure for a standout player in the NFL.
This suspension reflects the NFL's commitment to regulating unsportsmanlike conduct, particularly as spitting incidents typically resulted in fines. The Bengals will now need to recalibrate their game plan ahead of their encounter with New England as fans and analysts await the results without their star receiver.
