Jannik Sinner is gearing up to defend his ATP Finals title this Sunday, looking to end a challenging yet impressive year that may lead to another exciting encounter with his fierce rival, Carlos Alcaraz.
The current world number one has secured two Grand Slam titles in 2025, including a landmark victory against Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, and convincingly won the ATP Finals in Turin last year. Both athletes are anticipated to advance from their respective groups—Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors—setting the stage for a potentially epic semifinal or final matchup in the prestigious tournament featuring eight elite players.
Sinner reflected on the importance of their opening match by stating, "The first match is really important because usually you don't play against one of the best eight players in the world, and that's what makes it different for everyone."
This year has not been without its complications for Sinner, who faced a three-month suspension after the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed he ingested a banned substance accidentally. Additionally, skipping Italy’s Davis Cup title defense has drawn criticism from some segments of the Italian press. Nonetheless, he reiterated his pride in representing Italy during a recent interview.
With the Turin crowd behind him, Sinner remains a beloved figure in Italy, recalling his unbeaten journey last year while Alcaraz couldn't make it past the group stage.
Alcaraz, also a two-time Grand Slam winner this year—notably triumphing in a memorable Roland Garros final versus Sinner—has been training alongside his rival ahead of this event. The Spaniard aims for his first ATP Finals title and looks to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking by improving on his prior Finals performance.
The rivalry between the two is marked by respect and friendliness; Alcaraz stated, "Once we step on the court, we want to do our best just to win the match. But afterwards, when we shake hands off the court, we are the same person. That’s a really healthy rivalry."
Outside the court, tensions remain high as top ATP and WTA players have come together to advocate for improved revenue sharing and player welfare among Grand Slam organizers. Since the US Open, discussions have stalled, with women’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka expressing her frustration over the lack of communication, while male athletes, including Sinner and Alex de Minaur, have opted for a more reserved approach.
The ATP Finals are set to be an exhilarating conclusion to a dynamic season in men’s tennis, showcasing Sinner and Alcaraz at the forefront of the drama.
