Jannik Sinner secured his first-ever title at the Indian Wells Masters on Sunday after defeating Daniil Medvedev 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in a high-quality final played under the California desert sun.
The Italian star delivered a strong performance on the hard court, finishing the match with 28 winners, 10 aces and winning all eight of his net points. His clinical display helped him control the key moments of the match and seal the victory in straight sets.
With this triumph, Sinner became only the third player in history to win all six ATP Masters 1000 hard-court tournaments, joining tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
The win also marked Sinner’s first title of the year and extended his Masters 1000 winning streak to 11 matches, dating back to his victory at the Paris Masters in November.
The opening set was tightly contested as Medvedev applied early pressure and pushed the score to 6-5. However, Sinner forced a tiebreak where both players fought hard. The Italian gained the advantage when Medvedev missed a forehand volley at 5-4, allowing Sinner to close the set on his second set point.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Sinner took a 3-2 lead after breaking Medvedev in the fifth game, but the Russian responded strongly and levelled the match at 6-6 to force another tiebreak.
Medvedev started the tiebreak strongly and moved ahead 4-0, aiming to push the match into a deciding third set. However, Sinner showed remarkable composure, winning the next points to level at 4-4 before finishing the tiebreak 7-4 to secure the title.
Speaking after the match, Sinner said he stayed focused throughout the contest.
“I kept believing and kept pushing. I went for my shots a little more and tried my best to close the match,” he said.
He also praised his opponent, saying, “It was a very tough match. It is great to see Daniil playing at this level again.”
Medvedev reached the final in impressive form after defeating world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, ending the Spaniard’s 16-match winning streak at the start of the season. However, the loss marked Medvedev’s third defeat in an Indian Wells final.
Sinner’s victory further strengthens his position among the top players on the ATP Tour and highlights his growing dominance on hard courts.
