Japan Achieves Record Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions in FY2024

Post by : Shakul

In fiscal year 2024, Japan has achieved its lowest greenhouse gas emissions to date, marking a pivotal achievement in its climate initiatives. Official statistics indicate a 1.9% reduction from the prior year, continuing a positive trend of decreasing emissions.

The total greenhouse gas emissions now amount to 1.046 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, a decline from 1.067 billion tons recorded last year. This is the third year in a row that emissions have decreased, reaching the lowest level since monitoring began in 1990.

The primary factors for this reduction include a decrease in energy consumption across manufacturing sectors and a noticeable transition toward more sustainable energy options. The rise in renewable energy utilization and the gradual reinstatement of nuclear power have been instrumental in driving this downtrend.

Breakdown data reveals that emissions from industries dropped by 2.5%, while household emissions saw a decrease of 0.7%. The transportation sector also experienced a 1.6% reduction; however, commercial and service sector emissions saw a slight uptick.

Japan has set an ambitious target of achieving a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2013 levels by 2030. The latest data demonstrates a 24.9% fall compared to 2013, showing consistent advancement towards this target.

The country’s energy mix is progressively changing, with renewable sources constituting 23.1% of electricity production, and nuclear energy contributing 9.4%. Nonetheless, thermal power still plays a significant role, despite a downward trend.

Experts point out that emissions spiked after the Fukushima disaster in 2011 due to increased reliance on fossil fuels. However, the recent shift to cleaner energy signals a revitalized commitment to sustainable practices and long-term environmental objectives.
