A significant blow has struck England’s Ashes campaign in Australia, as pace bowler Jofra Archer has been sidelined for the rest of the series due to a side strain. This injury halts his return to Test cricket prematurely, adding to the woes of an England team already down 3-0 in the series.
The 30-year-old will miss the crucial fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day and the final match in Sydney next year. Following the Melbourne game, Archer is set to return to the UK for further evaluation, with his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka still uncertain.
Highlight in a Difficult Series
Despite the team’s struggles, Archer has emerged as a standout performer during the tour, taking nine wickets across three Tests and scoring a vital maiden Test half-century in the third Test at Adelaide. His five-wicket haul of 5-53 in Australia’s first innings there marked a significant return to form after six years.
However, concerns arose when he bowled just 12.4 overs in Australia’s second innings at Adelaide. Scans conducted on Tuesday in Melbourne confirmed the side strain, ending Archer's Ashes participation.
Replacements for Fourth Test
Gus Atkinson will step in for Archer, while changes will also be made to the batting order with Jacob Bethell replacing the struggling Ollie Pope.
Pope has faced a tough series, with a top score of only 46 in six innings, prompting selectors to act as England aims to salvage pride in the final Tests.
Opportunity for Bethell
Bethell, aged 22, made a promising Test debut in New Zealand last year, securing three half-centuries in as many matches but has had limited chances recently. His recent performance of 71 for England Lions against Australia A in Brisbane has reinforced his selection.
Speculation around Pope’s form had intensified, particularly following his removal as vice-captain prior to the series. This marks the first time since 2022 that he has been dropped from the Test side.
Stokes Acknowledges Archer's Determination
England's captain Ben Stokes commended Archer’s dedication, emphasizing how vital his comeback has been following numerous injury struggles.
“His effort over these three games has been outstanding,” Stokes remarked, adding that Archer has quelled many doubts ahead of the tour with his performances.
Bowling Resources at the Limit
England’s fast-bowling resources are now more limited, with Mark Wood also out with injury. Surrey player Matthew Fisher has been called up, and there are currently no plans to recruit another fast bowler into the squad.
Meanwhile, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir continues to be overlooked as England maintains their existing balance despite the anticipation of conditions favoring spin later in the series.
England's Squad for Fourth Ashes Test
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith, Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue.
With the Ashes lost, England must now regroup amid injuries and disappointment as they aim to regain some competitiveness in the series’ concluding Tests.
