Josh Hazlewood Cleared to Play Ahead of Ashes Test in Perth

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Australia’s seasoned bowler Josh Hazlewood has received the all-clear on a potential injury after scans indicated no serious issues with his hamstring. The precautionary checks followed a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where Hazlewood felt tightness in his right hamstring and left the field. Thankfully, the tests revealed no muscle strain, confirming his availability for the eagerly awaited first Ashes Test against England set for November 21 in Perth.

Good News for Australian Fans

Cricket Australia officially announced the positive result. “Hazlewood exited the match late in Victoria’s innings due to right hamstring tightness. Preventative scans have shown no muscle strain,” the statement indicated. This update reassured both the Australian team and its supporters who were apprehensive about a pre-series injury.

Moreover, it was confirmed that Hazlewood will travel to Perth and integrate with the squad as planned. “He will join the national team in Perth and participate in scheduled training before the first Test,” Cricket Australia confirmed. This sets the stage for Hazlewood's participation in the crucial opening match at Perth Stadium.

In contrast, Hazlewood's teammate Sean Abbott faced unfortunate news. Included in the Test squad as a back-up pacer, Abbott suffered a moderate-grade hamstring injury during the same game. Cricket Australia has indicated that Abbott will be unavailable for the first Test and a rehabilitation plan will be established in the coming weeks, potentially impacting Australia’s bowling strategy early in the series.

Captain Cummins to Miss Opening Test

Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, is unable to play in the first Ashes Test due to a back injury. Consequently, the pace attack for the upcoming match is set to comprise Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland. Hazlewood’s fitness adds significant strength to the team as they prepare to confront England's formidable batting lineup.

Before his exit from the game, Hazlewood bowled nine overs, claiming 1-22, but did not bat in the second innings. Despite his visible limping post-match, his spirits remained high, as noted by Cummins. “He’s feeling good after the scan,” Cummins remarked, underlining the team's cautious stance towards player injuries, especially ahead of such a pivotal series.

Safety First for Hazlewood

During a sponsorship event, Cummins further articulated the team’s careful approach regarding Hazlewood's condition, stating, “With the Test series just around the corner, we prioritize caution. We needed to fully understand the situation before proceeding to avoid any worsening of conditions.” His remarks emphasize the team's dedication to player health and preparedness for the intense Ashes combat.

Set to commence on November 21 in Perth, the Ashes series will also see matches in Brisbane and follow in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney as the New Year approaches. The series is anticipated to be fiercely competitive as both squads vie for supremacy in their historic rivalries. Australia is focusing on a strong opening at home, with Hazlewood's recovery being crucial in this endeavor.

Hazlewood’s clearance is a substantial advantage for Australia's bowling lineup, especially with the absence of their captain. Together with Mitchell Starc's pace and Boland's precision, Hazlewood’s reliability will be pivotal in gaining an upper hand within familiar conditions. The coaching staff will closely oversee Hazlewood’s training load in Perth to ensure he is completely fit for the opening Ashes showdown.
