Australia's leading pace bowler, Josh Hazlewood, has been ruled out for the entirety of the Ashes 2025 series against England after a series of injury complications, as confirmed by head coach Andrew McDonald on Tuesday. This announcement follows Hazlewood's absence in the opening matches held in Perth and Brisbane, creating a substantial void in the Australian bowling lineup.
In addressing the situation, McDonald voiced his sympathy for Hazlewood, stating, “It’s really tough for him. We certainly didn’t foresee these setbacks. We had expected him to play a vital role in the series. It’s unfortunate that he won’t get that chance.”
Hazlewood initially sustained a hamstring injury prior to the Perth Test, and further complications arose with a new injury affecting his lower calf and Achilles region just last week. This latest injury led to the announcement that the premier fast bowler will not participate in any matches of the five-Test series, which sees Australia currently leading 2-0 and needing just a draw in Adelaide to retain the Ashes.
The announcement of Hazlewood's absence coincided with England’s revelation that Mark Wood is also sidelined for the remainder of the series due to a knee injury, accentuating the injury challenges faced by both teams.
McDonald also confirmed that Pat Cummins, the regular captain and chief paceman for Australia, is anticipated to return for the Adelaide Test. Cummins has missed the initial matches due to a lower back injury but has completed match simulation training at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. “He’s gone through match-like simulations with multiple bowling spells. We believe he’s ready in terms of skills, and physically he’s prepared as well,” McDonald added. Assuming he faces no additional issues, Cummins is set to lead the team in Adelaide and fulfill his captaincy duties.
In other developments, the selectors made a surprising move by dropping veteran spinner Nathan Lyon from the first home Test in Brisbane since 2012, an action that provoked a heartfelt reaction from the 38-year-old bowler. McDonald, who participates in the selection discussions, recognized Lyon's disappointment while reiterating that the skilled spinner will have a significant role in the series moving forward.
As the current holders of the Ashes, Australia looks to solidify their lead in the series amidst significant player losses, while England navigates its own bowling injury challenges. The forthcoming Adelaide Test is poised to be a pivotal battle in this historic rivalry.
