JPMorgan Chase & Co has updated its outlook, indicating that the US Federal Reserve is likely to reduce interest rates as early as next month. This shift comes in response to recent encouraging comments from senior Fed officials, suggesting that a change in borrowing costs may happen sooner than originally expected.
This news arrives just ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for December 9–10 in Washington. Previously, JPMorgan had anticipated the Fed would maintain its current rates in December, planning to initiate cuts in January, especially after the release of the postponed September jobs report.
However, insights from prominent Fed members, especially from New York Fed President John Williams, have led JPMorgan to revise this timeline. Their latest forecast projects two quarter-point reductions: one in December and another in January, effectively moving the easing schedule up by a month.
Market reactions have echoed this change, with swap traders now estimating about an 80% probability of a rate cut next week—a notable increase from less than 30% just a week prior. This rise in expectations underscores a growing belief that the central bank may quickly act to bolster the economy in light of changing labor statistics and shifting policy signals.
As the December meeting approaches, these adjusted forecasts have amplified discussions in the market, enhancing scrutiny on the Fed's forthcoming decisions, which are poised to be among the year's most critical.
