Justin Thomas Delays 2026 Season Start Following Surgery

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas took to Instagram to announce that he has successfully undergone a microdiscectomy to address a disc issue in his back, which caused prolonged hip pain. He detailed that the discomfort had intensified over time, leading to the decision for surgical intervention based on MRI results. He expressed gratitude towards the medical staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York for their assistance during the process.

In his update, Thomas mentioned he had been combating persistent hip pain. Despite taking time off for recovery, the pain remained an issue. Upon medical examination, doctors discovered that surgery was essential for relief. After the operation, he was discharged promptly and conveyed to fans his commitment to embarking on a long recovery journey.

Thomas has made it clear that the following weeks will be dedicated to complete rest. He will only commence rehabilitation once this initial healing phase is over. He expressed trust in his medical support team and his belief that they will facilitate a return that is stronger and healthier than prior. Recovery is his utmost priority, and he remains optimistic about his future in golf.

Despite these physical hurdles, Thomas had a noteworthy season. He clinched victory at the RBC Heritage, his first tournament win in three years, after a playoff against Andrew Novak. The major championships posed some challenges, with missed cuts at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open, as well as underwhelming finishes at the Masters and the Open Championship outside the top 30.

He concluded his competitive season positively with the Ryder Cup, where he showcased impressive skills with two wins and two losses, including a standout singles match victory over Tommy Fleetwood. This win boosted his confidence and wrapped up his season on a high note.

Even amidst injuries and some disappointing results, Thomas demonstrated his resilience as a competitor, finishing the year ranked No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings. He recorded three runner-up finishes and eight top-10 finishes, underscoring his consistent performance on the tour.

Thomas emphasized that he will not rush his return to the golf course. He advised fans against expecting a specific date for his return, noting that he will miss several early 2026 tournaments. His primary objective is allowing the disc to heal entirely to prevent re-injury. With golf's longevity in mind, he aims to safeguard his future by exercising patience.

The upcoming PGA Tour season is set to commence on January 15 with the Sony Open in Hawaii, followed by several other events. However, Thomas is expected to miss the Sony Open and other initial tournaments as he continues his healing process. His focus is on returning only when he feels completely fit.

Supporters, colleagues, and analysts are eager for Thomas's full recovery. At peak form, he is recognized as one of the sport's most talented golfers globally. This surgical procedure offers him the chance for a thorough recovery, and many are confident that he will re-enter the circuit more robust and ready for the chase for more major victories.
